Scottish Whisky Distilleries

A logo (an abbreviation of logotype) is a graphic mark, emblem, or symbol used to aid and/or promote public recognition, which may be of an abstract or figurative design or include the text of the name it represents as in a logotype or wordmark.  Because a logo is a visual entity representing an organisation, the design of that logo is an important area of graphic design.  Examples of logos used by distilleries in Scotland follow.

There are six major distilling areas in Scotland and the Islands -- Campbeltown, Highland, Island, Islay, Lowland, and Speyside.  The actual owner of a distillery is shown in capital letters under its name and location.

Diageo is the undisputed giant of the Scottish Whisky industry, owning 27 single malt and 2 grain distilleries.  It built its name producing blended whisky, most notably Bells, and now owns Johnnie Walker.  In addition to these two, its blended malt whiskies are Black and White, Haig, J&B Rara, Spey Royal, VAT 69, White Horse, Buchanan’s, Dimple and Old Parr.

Pernod Ricard owns Chivas Brothers, making it the second largest Scotch whisky producer in the world, with 10 distilleries.  It is also a major producer of blended whisky with Chivas Regal, Ballantine’s and Canadian Club.

The Edrington Group owns five distilleries, and produces The Famous Grouse blended malt whisky and Cutty Sark.

Bacardi is the owner of Dewar’s, giving it control of 5 single malt distilleries.  Dewar’s blended whisky happens to be the best-selling brand in the U.S.

Fortune Brands, a large multinational with many interests including tobacco and spirits, put itself on the single malt map in 1997 with the acquisition of Allied Domecq, in partnership with Pernod Ricard, picking up the legendary Laphroaig distillery.  It also owns Ardmore and Teachers blended whisky.

Thai Beverages is Asia’s largest liquor company, which took a major stake in the world of whisky in 2001 with the acquisition of Inver House, a leading distiller of single malt Scotch.  It owns and operates five distilleries as well as owning the blended whisky brands MacArthur’s, Pinwinnie Royal, Hankey Bannister, Catto’s, Inver House Green Plaid.

India’s United Breweries Group purchased Whyte & Mackay, Scotland’s fourth largest maker of Scotch, in June 2007, thus giving it 4 single malt distilleries as well as Whyte & Mackay’s blended whisky.

Trinidad’s CL World Brands -- owner of Angostura bitters -- bought Burn Stewart in 2003, and now owns four distilleries.  It also produces the blended whiskies, Black Bottle and Scottish Leader.

William Grant’s is one of the few remaining family run whisky companies and is the owner of the best-selling single malt in the world, Glenfiddich.  It also owns another single malt, The Balvenie, and blends Grants and Clan MacGregor.

J & A Mitchell Co. is one of the last remaining family owned whisky producers in Scotland.  It has owned and operated the Springbank distillery since 1828, and recently acquired the Glengyle distillery.

Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton (LVMH), the French luxury goods company, acquired a majority stake in Glenmorangie in 2004 in a joint venture with minority owner DIAGEO, giving it control of the biggest selling malt in the U.K.  It also owns Glen Moray and Ardbeg.

Tullibardine Distilleries is a relatively recent independent arrival.  It was launched in 1946, sold to Whyte & Mackay in 1995, and then bought by a group of private investors.

The Japanese conglomerate Suntory owns Morrison Bowmore Distillers, and thus three main distilleries -- Bowmore, Auchentoshan and Glen Garioch.

Nikka, a Japanese whisky distiller and subsidiary of Japanese brewer Asahi, purchased Ben Nevis in 1989.

Takara Shuzo Company is the owner of the Tomatin distillery.
